I was thrilled when this book came out because I loved The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. Once Upon a River did not disappoint! Part historical fiction, part magical realism, this book overflowed with beautiful descriptive writing. I felt transported, like I was really there along the Thames River. I loved how we were introduced to many characters throughout the novel, each having their own story...and yet, as the story winded along (much like the Thames River), we were able to see how each character's story was woven and interconnected with the other characters. In this way were were able to see the picture as a whole. I loved how there were so many questions that we were left to devise our own conclusions from, as well as the hint of magical mystique.
