While I enjoyed this book, I would be hesitant to recommend it to my book groups. I'm not totally sure what genre it is? Historical fiction leaning towards fantasy?
I'm not even sure what year the story is set in.
Most of the characters were believable if not always likeable.
I finished the book, the story came to an end, but I still wasn't satisfied. That's why I gave it 3 stars.
I would really love to know what other readers thought of this book.
There was a certain sadness to the book. The bar owners husband is so sick he's going to die. Her one son is somehow damaged ( while all of her daughters are robust!) The nurse doesn't want children - although she, and others, are drawn to the little girl and everyone wants to take her in. Why? I don't know - she seems sad and distracted and like she is waiting for someone.
Have I gotten my point across? The story is a bit unsettling!
