Now this was a fascinating read. I'm not quite sure how to categorize this book more specifically than fiction. Historical fiction? Fantasy fiction? A bit of both? In any case, Once Upon a River was a read I couldn't put down. It's part mystery, part folklore, part supernatural. It takes place in England long ago along the Thames River, which features heavily in the story.

The book opens up with a mysterious stranger carrying what looks to be a doll, but is in fact a young girl who appears to be dead... until she wakes up and lives. There are missing daughters throughout the villages in England, and their families want to know if this girl can help find their missing children. But the girl doesn't recognize anyone, nor does she speak. She looks longingly at the river as if waiting for something or someone.

Reading this book was an experience. I highly recommend this book for fiction readers!
