I was thrilled to read “Once Upon a River” as I adored the author’s book, “The Thirteenth Tale.” The cover is gorgeous and the first words drew me in as the story started on winter solstice with an unusual visitor opens the door to the village pub known particularly for storytelling. The atmosphere of the book is slightly gothic with a heavy dose of mythology. The story is drawn out by the villagers who each have their own stories, biases, and past.

I would recommend this book to those who enjoy Susanna Kearsley, Kate Morton, Naomi Novak, and those who enjoyed “The Thirteenth Tale.” For me “Once Upon a River” was not a book to be rushed but to be savored slowly curled up by a cozy fire with some tea and wine.
