This is a book with many intersecting stories and at its heart is a mystery. There missing girls and then one appears on a long winter night. Who is she? Is the central question but also— what happened to the others. This is also the story of the women, the mothers, who have lost their children.
When I read this I was struck by the sadness in the lives of each of the characters. One man is dying. A woman is being abused. Another woman lost her child and now lays in her boat in the river, maybe intending not to come back. Another man wonders what has become of the boy that he raised. Each of these questions eventually resolve but we must first learn about the people that they concern. I wanted very much for the people in this book to find happiness.
