This is an English village mystery, a type of mystery I enjoy. It takes place during World War II and involves the National Pigeon Service (apparently a real volunteer organization in Britain during 1938 - 1945 that supplied over 200,000 pigeons for the war effort, including to the Royal Air Force and various intelligence services - who knew?). Our heroine, Olive Bright, and her father are well known for raising champion racing pigeons but are refused accreditation by the National Pigeon Service because her father is also well known for being inflexible and impossible to get along with. That's when one of the intelligence agencies steps in and wants to make a secret deal with Olive for the use of her pigeons in their undercover activities. There's also a murder mystery, of course, but for me the most interesting part of the book is the involvement of the pigeons (and Olive) in the war effort - a piece of history I had never heard before.
