This was a pleasant surprise! I wasn't expecting more than an average World War II historical fiction story going into this book, but I ended up really liking it! At its heart, it's a murder mystery set in a small town in the English countryside which comes with the regular troubles of village life - gossip, busybodys, and secrets. I was drawn in right away by the pigeons and their potential role in the war, but that part of the story wasn't the main focus. I would have liked to learn more about the pigeons and see them be more useful, but they made a good catalyst for introducing Olive to Captain Aldridge. Olive was spunky, precocious, and charming. She was easy to like and I enjoyed seeing her character develop. She wasn't afraid to do what she felt was right (investigate the murder) and wasn't afraid to speak up to herself (both to Jamie and the other villagers). It seems like this is the first book in a planned series and I get the impression that future installments will have more action for the pigeons and possibly some romance.
