My first impressions of this book are stellar - firstly, immediately I see a cast of characters that look like me, and in all my years of readership I have not seen a YA book with so many Black characters present. Black characters who look like modern black characters (i.e box braids, lace fronts, etc). Secondly, the book is focused on a family of successful Black people. As for the cover, it immediately drew me in because I could see myself in the girl on the cover, and the art style is extremely cute as well. I want to read more because I want to be able to celebrate Evie's victories and mourn her losses as if we are best friends, and I feel as though we are already connected.
