This is a huge book at almost 500 pages. It’s definitely a great choice for those who like substance in their reading material. While I don’t typically read a lot of historical fiction, this caught my attention because it is about Robin Hood, and who among us hasn’t heard about Robin Hood?

The author does a spectacular job of bringing the characters to life with the little mannerisms, speech and idiosyncrasies that make up each individual in the book. I really enjoyed the banter between Robin and William in the beginning, and it definitely showed what good friends they were. As times goes by their friendship, like many others, encounters differences of opinion and it’s interesting to see the direction the author takes with this aspect of the story. While not a page turner for the most part, the book does have some scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat until they were resolved. There were also some twists and turns throughout. As with any good book, the author added some unlikeable people which adds some spice to the story.

One thing that baffled me was the use of the f word throughout. Did people use that as a swear word in 1191? I doubt it, and it often jolted me out of the time period. There is also another curse word use now and then that involves God. While sex is mentioned, there weren’t any graphic scenes.

I enjoyed this accomplished retelling of the Robin Hood story.
