⚔️I was told by Nathan Makaryk, after mentioning on a post of his that I was almost done with his novel and was on the edge of my seat, to “[b]e careful, those last 10 pages are a doozie!” All I can say is that “doozie” is an understatement; I was so unprepared for what I read...but I’m getting ahead of myself.
🏹King Richard is away, fighting a war, but back at home another war is brewing. The powerful and the ambitious are running around, making far-reaching decisions unchecked, while everyone else is suffering and struggling. Fed up with the turn things have taken, a group of “criminals” decide to stand up and fight back against the rich and the powerful, but one wrong decision brings Robin, and his friend William, into their lives, setting the stage for this retelling of the well-known English folktale.
⚔️Nottingham has a lot of the characters people are familiar with, like Robin Locksley, Marion Fitzwalter, John Little, Friar Tuck and Will Scarlett, and some you are not. Makaryk does such an incredible job of developing these characters so fully throughout the novel. Nottingham being a multi-viewpoint novel, I felt like I was given the opportunity to get to know the characters inside and out, although sometimes they did surprised me. The descriptions are amazing as well; I felt like I could close my eyes and see everything. Plus Nathan Makaryk made me cry, which doesn’t happen, ever; just goes to show you the caliber of this novel.
🏹If you are a fan of Robin Hood, go read this book. If you like English folklore, go read this book. If you like great books, go read this book.
