Good, But Didn't Like the End

Nottingham by Nathan Makaryk is an intricate retelling of the Robin Hood story. I thought the story was interesting, the historical details were great, and the plot kept wanting me to read more. While I enjoyed it, it is possible that the story was a little too long, and the ending was a little futile.

The book was only a little over 490 pages, but as the print was a little on the smaller side, the word count to this book is a lot longer than a lot of similarly-sized books. This allowed for a lot of different POV characters and interwoven plots. In some ways, it reminded me of Game of Thrones (except the characters aren't as despicable). This is good and bad in some ways. The writing is good, so you get to spend more time in the world, but at the same time, if you were just looking for a book to read by the pool while on vacation, it might be a bit much.

What probably knocked this book a whole star for me was the... futility of it all. The ending is fairly tragic. I don't want to say too much about it because I don't want to give away spoilers, but if you're looking for a story where the world ends up a better place because of what happens in the story... you might be disappointed.

But overall, I did like the story.
