The story is set in the days of chaperoned, high society dances with the most elite in a region. Drusilla, who is known for proclaiming the reasons why women shouldn't marry, is prominent in the plot; her best friend, Eva, accompanies her to all the dances, many times with her brother, Gabriel, whom Drusilla has had a secret crush on for quite some time. On one such ball night, Drusilla is purposely set up to look like she has been comprised, causing Gabriel (her chaperone at the time), to pledge himself to marry her to avoid any scandal and save her virtue. The two have always had a "sharp-witted" repertoire, so they both question the relationship's survival. Add to this romance, scheming to deceive, prior relationships and family, and kidnapping, and there is plenty to keep this story moving.

This is a very enjoyable book for those who like romance and the time period of social dances and dressing up. I look forward to reading the sequel to see what happens next . . . yes, they leave you with unanswered questions.
