I was incredibly excited to read this book, and could not wait to get it in the mail. When it finally came, however, I am sad to say that I was very disappointed in it. From the very beginning I struggled to read it, and it did not get better.
The two main characters were extremely unlikable. Drucilla was just unpleasant and rude. I didn't like her. And it's hard to read a romance novel when you don't like the heroine. And then Gabriel was just confusing to me; I just didn't get it. Was he supposed to be angsty? It wasn't coming across. And was his background historically accurate? I'm not sure, but I have questions...
But my biggest issue was the mistresses. Honestly, I just don't like romances that have one or both of our main characters in relationships while the "courtship" is going on. That's just a personal preference. But Gabriel's relationship(s?) with his mistresses was off-putting, to say the least. It made me completely despise Gabriel, and in turn, the whole book.
I really wanted to like this book, but I absolutely did not.
