Oh, what a magical, fun read. From the political intrigue, to the glitzy ballrooms and magical speakeasy, this magical fantasy had everything you look for.

Nightbirds are girls with magical abilities and this book revolves around three girls, Matilde who comes from a rich family, sayer who is the daughter of a disgraced nightbird, and æsa, who wants to return to her family. I liked how completely different they are from one another, but they were all still relatable in different ways. I also enjoyed the banter and sarcasm between the characters. It not only set them apart, but gave me the sense of their personalities. Everyone wanted something from the Nightbirds, from their magical ability to what they represent. It was reflective of our society today. Most importantly, there’s strong female friendship and queer representation.

The concept of the great houses and the way the magic system worked, was really interesting. It wasn’t overcomplicated and it made it really easy to get lost in the world. There’s so much detail in the magic system without being overwhelming. I also really enjoyed the historical fiction aspect of this book, something that I’m starting to come to realize that I actually like. I liked that there’s a crossover with fantasy as well, which gave it a magical touch.

From the magic and glitz and glamour, this was such a fun read. There was sarcasm and witty banter as well as strong female friendship and some moments that made me laugh. And how beautiful was the cover? I loved the blue color scheme (and a really cool map!!). Nightbirds was a magical and fun read and if you’re looking for something glimmering with ballrooms and speakeasies, definitely check this book out.
