A Bit Confused, But I Guess it Could Be a Good Story?

I don't know if I understand the world correctly. I think it's supposed to be an indirect commentary about how women are typically just thought of in relation to men, but the magic system is a bit confusing. I don't quite know what the significance of the Nightbirds is supposed to be even after reading the summary and First Impression.
