This book immediately grabs your attention on the first page with a tense scene of volleyball on the beach, and before the page is turned we meet our love interest. Dean is a handsome pairing photographer who has been with Kaylee through every step of their lives. Dean and Kaylee's long-standing friendship from kindergarten explains their closeness, but also breeds complexity. This led to a short lasted relationship with where Kaylee ultimately dumped him. That first chapter creates longing for them to be closer and a sadness at their now uncomfortable distance. Confessing feelings affected the entire course of their relationship with each other.

Kaylee our protagonist is a driven perfectionist who entered her freshman year on the varsity volleyball team and dreams of making it to the Olympics. This is fueled in part by her mother's success and multiple gold medals that set a precedent for her to not only win but, to be the best. This influence has leaked into her own self-perception and it makes her feel the need to prove that she is good enough...at everything. Kaylee going above and beyond to gain acceptance from others, rings true to me like so many other women. She is successful athletically, socially, and even has a considerable following online. However, despite her love for her best friend and photographer, the commitment of dating him was too much for her to handle.

These few chapters were fun to read, and have piqued my curiosity of the course of their friendship and if a successful relationship. There are explanations of posting on social media and being a relatable teenager that can be a little cringey, but what about being a teenager isn't. This book sets the scene of a light-hearted summer read, that I would throw in my tote bag and take to the beach with my oat milk latte.
