Since I have fond memories of fairy tales being read to me as a child, and the joy I had of reading fairy tales as I learned to read on my own, I was excited to win the bookishfirst raffle of "Never After", by Melissa De La Cruz.
This novel did not disappoint! I loved how Ms. De La Cruz incorporated well known fairy tale characters into her novel. She did a great job of developing her own characters, as well as the plot and setting. Even though this novel was written as a fairy tale, the main characters were somewhat believable, which added to the enjoyment of this novel for me.
A basic summary, without giving too much away:
The story blends a fairy tale with the life of the main character, Filomena. Filomena is a student in a California middle school who had one close friend that ends up with the group that bullies Filomena. One of Filomena's passions, is reading the books in the Never After series. At the beginning of this novel, Filomena is on her way to the bookstore to purchase the thirteenth and final novel in the series. This is where our novel begins.
I would definitely recommend this book for YA (middle school and above) to adult readers.
