Similar to the likes of Jen Calonita's Fairy Tale Reform School series & Anna James The Bookwanderer's series, De La Cruz's Never After is a wonderful addition to the fractured fairy tales world of fiction! Like with her entertaining Descendants series, Never After: The Thirteenth Fairy follows seemingly ordinary Filomena on an adventure that blends her reality with the pages of her favorite magical stories. Struggling with happiness in her own life, Filomena gets pulled into helping out in the world she herself has often escaped to & now she is the one people need help from. I will admit that while the first half of the book read at a nice pace, it does feel a bit rushed in the second half however in terms of the development of Filomena as a character & her struggle for independence & finding herself as the book comes to a close.

As with most creative endeavors of this nature, this new series is another firm testament to the powerful magic of books & the imagination that both the characters in them display & book lovers reading along share as they travel through the journey & all its bumps together. I love a book that sets it's tone through it's main character because I feel like that helps build a reader's connection to what the characters are facing. I am such a fan of the blending of reality & fantasy in young adult fiction, so this series is another that I am highly anticipating reading the next book of!
