Wow. This book was a whirlwind.

It starts out with a woman, who is grieving the life of her son, and her husband who wants her to have a second child. The woman (Claire) fears having another child of her own, due to the genetic disorder that she passed down to her son, and led to his death.

When her husband finally convinces her to go through IVF treatments, Claire sets up an unusual, and illegal, contract with the doctor and his assistant which would help Claire to ensure that she has a healthy baby.

The story is told from three different points of view. The first is from the view of Claire. The second is through the eyes of the doctor's assistant, Jillian. And the third is through Claire's daughter, Abby. Each has a very different view, and understanding, of the life that they are living.

I found this book to be a fascinating mix of science fiction and thriller. On the one hand there is some science behind the IVF and some of the techniques that are used to ensure that Abby is a healthy child. Then on the other hand you have a crazy person who is trying to manipulate the situation for her best, by using science in order to continue the manipulation. I found the ideas a bit horrifying, but I also found the story to be completely fascinating and I was hooked to the last minute.
