Missing Isaac, by Valerie Fraser Luesse, is the story of Pete, who grows up in the 1960s in Glory, Alabama, and his friendship with Isaac, a field worker on his family's farm - and what happens when Isaac goes missing. Pete is 12, and wants to be like his dad. When his dad dies in a farming accident, his dad's African-American farm hand steps in to fill some of the pain and emptiness. Pete is allowed a look into a world much different than one he grew up in when Isaac shares his Southern Black Community. But then Isaac disappears, and enters Dovey Pickett, poor and unschooled, she becomes Pete's best friend.
The story weaves a tale about loyalty, compassion, and fighting for what is right. A very well written book, with excellent characters. This is one that grabbed my heart and will stay with me for a long time.
