There is only a small amount to read in the excerpt, but it pulled me in! Being set in 1965, the language used by the characters helps you imagine them completely. There wasn't enough to read for me to determine much about the plot, but I do like the style of this book and can't wait to read more!

The family appears to be close, with the grandfather and grandson making it a nightly ritual to play checkers. You can sense the love that the son has for his father by the simple fact that he loves to wear his father's shirt (which is way too big for him).

You can feel the rush of urgency for the characters to get to the scene of the accident. And you can feel the love and concern of the worker who tries to shield the son from the accident.
