Missing Isaac is southern coming-of-age, love story complete with racial tensions and mystery in the mix. Set in the 1960's, Luesse captures the charm, beauty and often stark contrasts of life in the small town of Glory, Alabama.

The title of the book was a bit misleading for me. I expected the story to focus on Isaac, and how his impacted those who loved him. While Isaac has strong character development in the early chapters, his storyline fades as Pete and Dovey's relationship blossoms. Several other interesting plot lines emerge, while Pete's grandfather continues his relentless search for answers in Isaac's disappearance. By the time Isaac's disappearance is solved, the other plot lines have overshadowed his importance. The characters moved on, and so had I.

Luesse's writing style is inviting and wonderfully descriptive. Missing Isaac is a good, quick read that would pair nicely with a porch swing and some ice tea and a warm spring day.
