The opening chapter is compelling. Young Issac is playing checkers with his grandfather, looking forward to his dad coming home. You can feel the warmth and love of the family when it is interrupted by a truck driving up and honking loudly. You feel the tension that something is about to go wrong.

I love Southern literature and stories of how people overcame hard obstacles and how it changes them. I really am drawn to the cover. It's very simple, but the little boy with the fishing pole is so reminiscent of my own childhood with my granddad in rural Georgia. I would love to read this debut!
