This is a story of a girl who returns to her hometown for a funeral, and repairs broken relationships with old neighbors. I enjoyed the story itself, including the detailed characterization of multiple people and families. However, some plot points were very trite and predictable, so although this was a page-turner in a heartwarming way, it felt more like an easy beach read than an intelligent or thought-provoking novel. The characters were relatable albeit a tad one-dimensional. I enjoyed the magical realism but would have liked for it to be presented in a more subtle way for readers to figure out themselves. Overall it felt like a juvenile adaptation of what could have been a wonderful book for adults.
