If I saw "Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe" at my local independent bookstore, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I grew up in the Southern United States, and stories set that locale always take me back. I remember long, hot afternoons helping Momma bake pies and cookies. And the family secrets! The cover of this novel made me think of all the times we kids were sent out of the room when the adults began to talk. Secrets that I'm still learning about 60 years later. Like Anna Kate and her mother, Momma and I didn't always get along. But the pull of family that draws Anna Kate to "the place her mother couldn't wait to leave behind," feels familiar. I can't wait to read this novel. Please, please please pick me!
