One of my favorite books so far this year
I was absolutely enthralled by this story of a small town as seen from the wife of one of three sons. Marley, the narrative character, is used to moving around with her mom. When they stop in Mercury, Marley is drawn into a family of roofers. The family matriarch at first is sympathetic but rapidly, to me, evolves into a cold and pretty much narcissistic character.
As Marley dates one brother but married another, you can see the fissures come to light. Then a body is discovered in the church attic. The body has been there for some time and I was very invested in the resolution of the mystery.
The writing here was a bit dispassionate to me, maybe in time with the mother’s character. I really wanted this family of brothers to be much less stoic and really connect with each other. That said, this book kept my interest throughout. I look forward to the next book by Amy Jo Burns.
