Thoughtfully told, a keen character study with spotty pacing.

I was really looking forward to this book but sadly, it took quite a while to grab me. I had to try to re-read it several times before it finally “stuck” in a sense. The main character, Raj, is keenly developed for better and worse. His every thought from the mundane and trivial to the thought-provoking and incisive are on full display and perhaps too lost in rambling details. I found myself struggling to care about the inner workings of his day-to-day life and the journal-like chronicling of a long (if eventful) week in this character’s life. But then there would be a very worthwhile paragraph here or there, sparks of a point-of-view that merits more interest. It was just unfortunate that so much of that was squeezed between what I felt were dull and plain, plodding details of Raj’s work and life. Moreover, Raj himself is so central to whether this book can be at all enjoyable. If you like Raj’s voice, you’ll like this book. If you end up having a more mixed opinion about the guy, the book itself may be more of a mixed bag. I fell more in that camp. Taken as a whole, it’s still a book worth trying and I don’t regret having read it.
