Set over the course of just a few days, Members Only covers the fallout from an offhand horribly racist spur of the moment comment from Raj, an Indian-American man who's been in the US since he was 8 years old, in a misguided attempt to connect with the only other people of color that have been considered for an invitation only tennis club. At the same time, he's dealing with the fallout of "reverse racism" claims from his students, saying that he's teaching anti-Western bias and hatred of Christianity during his anthropology classes. The subtle nuances of race relations are handled deftly and with nuance by Pandya and I could feel myself growing frustrated, along with the main character, from the ridiculous claims of oppression from his privileged students. The protagonist is flawed, humble, at times angry, but throughout the entire short span of the time we have with him, human. It's beautifully written and well deserving of all the accolades it's received.
