The synopsis for MEMBERS ONLY sounded good, and I felt like there was the opportunity for an adult #OwnVoices read. Racial biases, people pretending to be unprejudiced when they aren't - this is all very real. It is also understandable that sometimes people of all ages try to break the ice by being funny or attempting to be so. However, I simply could not buy into the plot device of an educated adult from India using the N-word in an American setting among other adults. I flipped back a page and reread the events leading up to that comment and struggled with the fact that the comment was so random.
