I love the Legacy of Orisha series by Tomi Adeyemi, so picking up a copy of Masquerade by O.O. Sangoyomi seemed like something that was right up my alley. What I didn't anticipate was that this was a bit darker than what I am in to. There is an element of "romance" in this (notice the quotes around romance) that I just couldn't get behind. I understand that power is a corruptor and power can cause comfort, but I still have a hard time with romancing the kidnapper style stories. I wanted to like this and I find the story engaging (but a little slow at times), but I just couldn't back the main character or feel like she was making choices that I can stand behind. I need to relate to a character and this one was a little too far out there for me. If you are a person that likes an unlikable character, this may be for you, but if you want to journey with a character that you like, maybe pick a different book...
