A whodunnit, a school for magic, a good detective story all crammed into a book aimed at adults? Sounds like a mess, but somehow the highlight of it all is the fun and complex family relationship to pick apart. Witty, sad, entertaining and feels real in a way books about magic rarely do, Magic for Liars wants you to care, to understand and to enjoy. Making the humanity of the characters so central in a fantasy book has rarely paid off so well.

I'm hesitant to say I want a sequel, because it stands so well alone, but I am very curious to see what Sarah Gailey does next. River of Teeth, was fun, but didn't knock me out. Magic for Liars is a knockout and I'm excited to see what unique setting and focus she turns to next.
