I was over the moon excited about this book, I loved Sarah Gailey’s River of Teeth novellas (like I make everyone I know read them including strangers on the street) and I couldn’t wait for her debut novel. Sadly, I finished this book feeling meh. I thought the writing was lacking (which is super supring because I LOVED her writing in American Hippo) and the magic system used in the book was to “hand wavy” for me. Gailey never really explains how the magic in the book works and kinda just shrugs it off saying if you’re not magic you can’t really understand it. Part of why I read fantasy is the world building so the lack of explanation bummed me out.
While I did really like the plot of the story and the noir feel of the whole book I’m a little over the female PI who’s less is a mess and drinks too much (this is a completely personal preference and I can totally see a lot of other people loving this aspect of the book).
In the end the plot and atmosphere was fun but I wanted more from Gailey’s first full length story.
