I really liked the fact that this book started out with a strong old time type detective feel with the private investigator and the different tropes of the genre in the beginning. But, it is different and unique because we have a female protagonist who is investigating the crime and it is centered around magic at a school for kids who have magical abilities. I loved the way the book seemed so realistic with the magic parts (not unlike True Blood with normalizing vampires). It was good because it really felt like it could be possible and combined with mystery in the story, it really built up to an interesting plot twist and was filled with suspense. I really enjoyed the combination of a fantasy type genre with a mystery or thriller. It was a little bit predictable, but overall I really liked this.
