Magic for liars is a perfect mix of detective novel and magical academia.

Ivy is a little short on luck, but doing her best to keep her private detective service open for business when she gets a chance to take on a new challenge: the mysterious death of a magic academy teacher. The only hitch? Ivy’s magical sister is a teacher there. Non-magical Ivy must put aside her lingering jealously, get closer to her sister, and put her skills to the test if she wants to take her career to the next level.

Ivy’s relationship with her sister is so well written. I could feel their strain to move closer despite past trauma, their lingering secrets, and their deeply seeded sibling love all at the same time. Their relationship also clearly has an effect on the investigation.

The story also did an excellent job of weaving in details of how the magic in this world works through students’ magical antics and glimpses into the classes they’re taking.
