Great for fans of Harry Potter or The Magicians
There is magic, but Ivy Gamble isn't part of that world. She watched from the sidelines while her twin sister Tabitha discovered her magic, went off to an exclusive magical school and seemingly forgot about Ivy. Now years later Ivy is a private detective, mainly messy divorces and other sordid things, and Tabitha is a teacher at the same exclusive school she attended. Their worlds collide when one of the teachers at the school is brutally killed and Ivy is asked to intervene in the investigation.
It's refreshing to have a story told from the 'muggle' point of view, and Ivy is a compelling character for whom to root. She both disdains the magical world, in part due to her feelings of abandonment by her sister, but also desperately wants to be part of it. Her detective skills are also put to use here, but with the added stress of her sister, and a budding romance with another teacher, distract her from the horrible truth...
