Armed with a ticket, Valora Luck is boarding The Titanic, ready to set sail on her maiden voyage. The only problem is due to the Chinese Exclusion Act, she cannot board without special papers, which she doesn't have. However, she's got to get on that ship because her twin brother is aboard, and she has big plans to take their acrobatic act to the Ringling Brother's Circus in America. Once she sneaks aboard, she meets people who will help her along her journey and those who will do anything in their power to make sure she fails. First of all, I had no knowledge of the Chinese Exclusion Act, which was the only one of its kind. This book was unique for the fact that I was pretty certain I knew a major component of the ending. The ship will sink. There is no liberty with things like that in historical fiction, a genre I don't often read. That said, I loved this book. Valora and Chinese men she befriends are wonderfully written characters. In fact, Lee starts her story with a fact: six of the eight Chinese passengers on the Titanic survived. That's pretty amazing considering how few third class passengers survived in general. Lee notes that very little is known about the actual Chinese people who were on the Titanic, but I really loved her imagining of who these people might have been. I cannot recommend this book enough, especially if you're interested in reading a story from the Titanic that hasn't been told yet.
