One of my favorite books is Salt to the Sea so I felt immediately drawn to this book. Valora is the narrator of the book. She plans to board the Titanic where her brother is in order to convince him to show off their joint acrobatic skills in the hopes to get to America. Valora uses a lot of Chinese metaphors and saying in her narration which made the story hard to stay in for me. That said, I loved the cast of characters, particularly Wink, Olly, and April. I appreciate the emotional growth that Valora goes through during the book, and I loved all of her interactions with Jamie, her twin. Because the Titanic tragedy is so well known, I knew many of the things before they happened, but I really appreciated getting the view from the Chinese perspective. You know there will be death but I was still caught off guard by who lived and died and how they handled the immediate time after the Titanic. I wish we could have seen an epilogue years later with more updates on characters.
