This YA historical fiction novel is about twins who reunite on the Titanic! That alone sold me.
Valora Luck boards the Titanic in search of her twin brother Jamie. The two reunite after being separated for two years. Valora’s plan is to resume their acrobatic act and capture the attention of a Ringling Brothers Circus owner who is also on board. A job in the circus is their one chance to get to live and work in America.
Little do they know, tragedy looms aboard the ship and they’ll soon be more worried about making it to New York alive.The bond between Valora and Jamie is something you won’t forget.
The build up to the ship sinking is a bit slow, but worth it once the pace picks up. I would definitely recommend this to any historical fiction lover, even if you’re hesitant about it being labeled YA.
In her author’s note, Lee explains that she wanted to write this story because the few Chinese survivors were immediately told they weren’t welcome in America, and made to feel guilty about surviving. Their stories valuable and important and deserve to be remembered.
