As we learn in the author’s note, this book was written in remembrance of the 8 Chinese men who were aboard the Titanic and who, out of the ones who survived, never felt worthy to tell their story. The author did an amazing job at presenting us with this powerful story. I didn’t know much about the Titanic before beginning this book, but I am now interested to continue learning. I loved the amount of historical accuracy that was placed in this book. I appreciate the time that the author took to do this. It allowed this fictional book to be both educational and entertaining.

What really moved and was at the center of this story was the characters learning to accept and deal with change. The characters we followed had growth throughout the story, and I became invested in them. Our main character, Valora, and her brother especially dealt with the topic of letting go of what you may have viewed your life looking like. They were dynamic in their personality, challenges and hopes. Their relationship was one I loved reading about, however, theirs was just one of many amazing bonds we got to see develop.

The style of writing was elegant and flowed nicely. The author presented details and information in an engaging and visionary way. This is a book that will transport you back in time and will have you turning page after page. Even though we know what the climax will be, I was still compelled to read.

I also really appreciate the author’s limited use of profanity. The D-word came up maybe once or twice, but that’s it. An excellent Titanic retelling that I would highly recommend.
