I did the majority of this one on audio and it was a quick one day listen for me while I worked on book origami projects. It is a bit of a slow burn mystery, but I was quickly drawn in to the story. I found most of the characters to be fairly unlikable which made it harder for me to connect to the story. I’m also a weirdo who doesn’t like to set a book down until I finish a chapter and this was broken out by day meaning super long chapters and no easy stopping point.

I was expecting more of a thriller but there is very little suspense and it felt more like a family drama with a bit of a slow burn mystery. There were serious social issues in this (racism, class, privilege and addiction), but it felt like it didn’t dig deep enough into them to really have a message or impact. The ending perhaps did, but I really disliked it and it left me feeling very unsatisfied and wondering what the author was trying to convey with this book. It was a quick read and did have some interesting mystery aspects, but wasn’t quite what I expected it to be. I have seen great reviews for it though, so might just be a case of me having the wrong expectations for it.
