The premise sounded intriguing enough, but I have a massive issue with books that include, much less start, with animal harm, particularly those that dwell on such scenes. I will say this needs a content warning for animal harm (and then animal aggression, I guess), but this made it hard to want to read further. Just a me issue, for sure.
