This is a retelling of the Classic take on "The Goose Girl". Now reading this, I knew it was a retelling but I wasn't here for that I was here for Vanya and her story and boy did I get it. Vanya is a very intriguing person, she is a thief who has been tasked to choose between her Godmother's Death and Fortune while at the same time, trying to make up for what she stole in order to appease a curse given to her by another God. Vanya's greed reminded me of the tale of Midas right off the bat since the first thing she tried to do was pry the ruby teardrop off of her face. Also the side characters, I love all of them. Ragne was just so adorable and witty and provided a good humor and her relationship with Vanya is a bit of a best friend's one. Also Vanya and Emeric's banter is what I love for between two characters. Especially the sausage scene, that was masterfully done. This is easily my absolute favorite book of 2021. I love everything about it, the book, the illustrations that the author did HERSELF. And especially the gorgeous art prints and the special edition. This is a book I can easily read again and again even though I know the ending.
