This book sits at a solid 3.5, rounded up to 4 for review purposes.

I think my favorite part of the book was definitely Vanja. Being in her head was so interesting, because she was multi-faceted. She's definitely a morally grey character, but I still rooted for her through the end.

The dialogue was quick and snarky, especially the conversations between Vanja and Emeric. Some of the other characters didn't feel as hashed-out, but I still enjoyed their place in the story. I also enjoyed the plot twists; none of them were easily predictable, and it kept me on the edge of my seat while I read.

My main issue was with some of the world-building and the pacing. There was a lot of politics involved in the plot of the story (particularly with Vanja impersonating a princess), but a lot of the roles and set-up were confusing until I looked at the glossary in the back. However, I don't want to rely on a glossary to know what is going on with the world building, you know?

I also struggled to get through this book because of the length. It sits at about 500 pages long, but it only takes place over two weeks. The beginning dragged a bit for me (a lot going on in the space of like a day or two in book time), which made me not motivated to read it. I really thought this book was going to put me into a slump, but after reading about 100 pages in one sitting the plot got more intense and I actually wanted to finish it.

Make sure to check out any TW before reading. Enjoy! - Lindsey
