Oh my god. Oh my god. This book was perfection. I cannot believe how fast I devoured this story and how hard I fell for it and these characters. Vanja is such an amazing character that has so many different layers to her that you learn about as the novel goes on. She has gone through so much from being abandoned by her own mother and then experiencing things as a maid to the princess. Reading some of the scenes where we got a deeper understanding of her feelings actually made me tear up and that is rare for me when I'm reading. Margaret Owen writes these characters that are have so many dimensions and are so easy to connect to. The plot of this story was insane and draws you in from the very beginning. I mean, how could you not be interested in a story that starts out with a little girl being adopted by the gods of Death and Fortune? I loved the lore in this world and it was just a fantastic read. It's one of my favorite books that I have read this year by far. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
