This book was absolutely delightful and a completely unique retelling of the Goose Girl. It took a little bit for me to get into the story but once I did I had a hard time putting it down. Vanja has used many names as she lies and steals to try to buy her own life and freedom. When Vanja was 4 her mother feeling she was unlucky as the 13th daughter of the 13th daughter gifts her to the gods of Death and Fortune. They care for her lovingly for a short time before returning her to the mortal world where she is worked hard for scraps. She becomes a lady’s maid to a princess and believes them to be friends. Vanja is satisfied with her fully belly and warm place to sleep but when she feels the princess betrays her she realizes the nobles only take and if she wants a life she’ll have to do the same. At 13 Death and Fortune explain that she is to choose who she will serve. She doesn’t want to be anyone’s servant. She replaces the princess and also becomes an infamous thief who almost has enough to run away when she is cursed to wear her greed and has gemstones blossom out of her skin.
