With Fortune and Death as her godmothers, Vanja is placed in a position where she must never ask for their assistance or be forced to spend the rest of her days as a servant to one and only one of her surrogate mothers. She is a successful thief using an enchanted necklace to appear to the world as a princess. Her plans go awry when she's cursed by a forest spirit.

The writing translates as sinister and eerie just like a true fairy tale. The illustrations between passages are fantastic and creepy as well. All in all, this book was everything I hoped it would be when I picked it up.
