This author did not waste any time in establishing a heartbreaking scenario: a mother has brought her unwanted four-year-old child into the dark forest to leave her behind. The other twelve children were fed Mother's lie, that she's taken child number thirteen into the forest to seek her fortune. I really liked the fact that the characters of Fortune and Death call the mother on her lie; it is chilling when Death calls out the mother on her lie and says, "In truth, you were seeking me."I

It is interesting that Death and Fortune accept the child named Vanja, become her godmothers, but demand repayment when it is clear that she has no way to do so. Until she decides to steal the life of someone who is a princess. The reason this book seems to be four stars is that I was a little unclear about the transformation of this hijacked princess's life. What all was going on during the passage of thirteen years with these strange godmothers? Year which are acknowledged with one sentence, stating the passage of time. Now that the teenage princess is attending a fancy party for some important rulers' twentieth wedding anniversary, it seems that the princess's life might be about to unravel in conjunction with some evil deed.
