Vanja Schmidt was given up to the goddesses Death and Fortune as a small child. Now at nearly 17 years old, she masquerades as a princess to gain access and steal from the homes of the gentry. When she steals from the wrong household and angers a local forest goddess, she has two weeks to give back everything she’s taken in order to stop a curse from turning her into a pile of rubies and pearls.
The best thing about this book is the characters. They’re all relatable, even if they’re not always likable. Ragne was my personal favorite and I liked how Owens handled her characterization. The dialogue and plot were good, but something was off about the pacing. The first few chapters set everything up pretty well and move quickly to do that, but it got bogged down after that. I found myself putting the book down and not in a big hurry to pick it back up again. Overall, a great YA retelling with a great, diverse cast of characters.
