As much as I may have hyped this book up in my own head, it did not disappoint! There was so so so much to love about it but some of my favorite things about this book were:

-The gods/Death and Fortune (I happen to love gods/goddesses and the personification of concepts like death and fortune)

-The way each section is framed

-LGBTQ+ rep

-It is as much a story of personal growth and identity as it is a story of love

-Vanja and the way she can be viscerally unlikable sometimes

Now I realize that at least the last item on this list sounds a bit alarming, but I can assure you, Vanja is a great MC. I could go into a whole thing about how we tell stories about women and the tropes women have been forced into in the past to explain why I love her sometimes thorny nature, but I won’t bore you with all right now.

I found this to be an incredibly empowering tale and one of the best executions of character growth I’ve read in a while. Not to mention, it’s an absolutely kick a** retelling of “The Goose Girl” so it has all those core aspects of fables and fairytales that readers have loved for centuries but with modern messaging. This is a story with teeth.

The blurb for the book calls it “a delightfully irreverent retelling…about stolen lives, thorny truths, and the wicked girls at the heart of both” and I don’t think there is a better way to sum it up.

Coming out October 5th 2021, this book should definitely be on your cozy fall and winter TBR list.
