The synopsis of this book jumped out at me because I so enjoy a good retelling of classic fairy tales. The beginning had me hooked with its descriptive language and fraught tension. I did not anticipate Death offering the mother an ultimatum. And I loved the idea of 13th daughter of a 13th daughter being, for lack of a better word, cursed with bad luck.

The book quickly takes off from there as we see young adule Vanja with her good (yet somewhat tainted) fortune imitating a life of high society. I did not expect her to be the Pfennigeist and I can't wait to see her get caught and face her supernatural punishment. She's a likable character that is clearly under the influence of Fortune and Death and I look forward to seeing how she manages to free herself of that. This has the potential to be the beginning of a great series as well.
